Online CPE with SFNM
You:
An SFNM CPE Student whose CPE Unit has been approved for the all-online option. In this configuration, a clinical site fee is paid to SFNM.
You are required to complete 300 clinical hours total. Two hundred of your clinical hours will be completed via the SFNM Care Line and virtual/digital programs. One hundred of your clinical hours will be completed at an external site (non-SFNM) that is local to you and approved by SFNM. The local site is required to have a supervisor (called a Preceptor) who will supervise your clinical work. You can read more below about what qualifies an external site, who a qualified supervisor/Preceptor is, and what is required of your supervisor/Preceptor at an external site.
Us:
Your Online CPE Site, supervising and providing your CPE education, facilitating your completed CPE Unit.
What to do:
1. Sign the SFNM CPE Student External Site for Clinical Hours agreement before starting your CPE Unit. Download, fill out, and ask your supervisor (the Perceptor) to submit this form with the Preceptor Onboarding Form.
2. Have your supervisor (the Preceptor) at your external site complete the Preceptor Onboarding Form before starting your CPE Unit (note: This form will ask your Preceptor to upload the SFNM CPE Student External Site for Clinical Hours agreement, as well as their resume/CV for SFNM's required CPE documentation).
FAQ
-
ACPE maintains specific requirements for external clinical sites, and SFNM adheres to these standards to maintain our ACPE certification. In addition to the above forms, and resume/CV submissions, the external clinical site must provide students access to a population that offers significant opportunity for spiritual care, ongoing support and consultation for the student(s), opportunities for interdisciplinary and professional interchange, and an environment that encourages human growth and dignity.
-
Your preceptor is your clinical supervisor at your external clinical site. This person is the point of contact with SFNM and your CPE educator. The preceptor is a contextually relevant professional practicing in and recognized by the clinical placement site and the ACPE Certified Educator. Recognition for this role requires one or more of the following: professional licensing, professional certification/authority to function in their role; and/or an advanced degree in their field of expertise; and/or faith group endorsement/local equivalent process.

As a Preceptor, you'll orient your student to your placement site and ensure that the student understands the context for this placement; address the student’s questions and learning needs about the placement site; communicate with SFNM's ACPE Certified Educator regularly about fulfillment of the student’s administrative obligations and the responsibilities outlined in the clinical site agreement. This includes the student’s clinical work, work habits, and investment in the learning process at the placement site.
Your student will share their learning goals with you (the supervisor/Preceptor), and both the Preceptor and CPE Educator will meet to discuss the student's progress and experience. Preceptors are required to complete an online evaluation of the student's progress at the end of the CPE unit.
