Volunteer with us
Provide a Meal
Host a brown-bag meal after one of our weekly gatherings—Open Shabbat, Open Sangha, or Open Cathedral. With two to three community events each week, there are abundant opportunities to help ensure our neighbors are fed with dignity, in body and in spirit.
This also needs a contact form, or to connect/link to [email protected]
Become A Care Line Counselor
Join our community of Care Line Counselors and offer spiritual care from wherever you are in the world. We provide thoughtful in-depth training and ongoing support, you bring your heart and willingness to accompany callers in moments of need and connection.
Opportunities are available nightly, in 3-hour shifts. You choose your frequency of involvement. Our minimum commitment is 3 shifts per month.
Become A Night Minister
Night Ministers are professionally trained and paid members of the Night Ministry team. Many are leaders within their spiritual traditions; all are equipped to offer presence, care, and spiritual companionship on the streets at night.
If you feel called to this kind of work and are already a professionally trained spiritual caregiver, please contact Director of Night Ministries, Shelly Webb.
If you’re not yet a trained spiritual professional, you can explore and develop community chaplaincy skills through our Ambassadors Program—a training and volunteer pathway for those who want to offer care alongside Night Ministers. Ambassadors receive individualized training and commit to a five-month, 100-hour volunteer experience on the streets.
Be Part of the Circle
Help us expand the Circle of Care
The Circle of Friends is a special community of people who love Night Ministry and want to help others discover and love it too.
Members use their voices, networks, and creativity to lift up our work by sharing stories, inviting friends, and helping us reach new hearts. We gather a couple of times a year to connect, celebrate, and dream together.
If you believe in what we do and want to help us grow our network of care and support, come and join the Circle!
Join the Board of San Francisco Night Ministry
For nearly 60 years, San Francisco Night Ministry has been a quiet, steady presence of compassion on city streets and in gathering places. Our Governing Board steers this work—ensuring that Night Ministry thrives as both a historic institution and a living movement of care.
We’re looking for experienced leaders who want to make a tangible difference at the intersections of spiritual care, social impact, and civic life in San Francisco and beyond. As a member of our Board, you’ll help shape strategy, expand our network of relationships, and strengthen our capacity to care for the many people who simply need to be reminded that they, too, are loved and matter.
Our Mission:
We increase access to spiritual care and community at night-- on the phones, and on the streets.
Our Vision:
A world where everyone knows their sacred worth, lives fully, and is never left alone.
Who You Are
You bring skills, connections, and energy. Maybe you’re an expert—or simply passionate—about finance, events, law, HR, communications, or technology. You’re someone who wants to pair professional acumen with compassion, helping sustain a mission that meets people where they are, every night of the year.
What It Means to Serve
Monthly meetings (3rd Mondays, 6–8 PM; Zoom + occasional in-person in SF)
Annual retreat for visioning and connection
Fundraising commitment of $2,000 annually (give or get)
Engagement in a powerful 60-year legacy of care and justice in San Francisco
Why It Matters
Serving on Night Ministry’s Board isn’t just volunteer work. This is actual service that changes real lives- yours, and the people you'll touch through your leadership. It’s a chance to help guide one of San Francisco’s most quietly influential institutions. Our board members are ambassadors of hope, connectors across faith and civic life, and stewards of a mission that keeps spirits sustained after dark.
If you have a heart for this work—and want to help expand our circle of care—we’d love to hear from you. Submit an inquiry form below.
