Remembering the Rev. Sylvia Mueller
May 3, 1959 - January 28, 2026
San Francisco Night Ministry gives thanks for the life and ministry of the Rev. Sylvia Mueller, who served for a season as an Assistant Night Minister.
Sylvia’s ministry carried a deep commitment to presence, listening, compassion, and care for those too easily overlooked. Her obituary remembers that, when she returned to California, she joined San Francisco Night Ministry, walking city streets late into the night to offer conversation, prayer, and a listening ear to those living on the margins.
Night Minister Emeritus the Rev. Lyle Beckman remembered Sylvia’s ministry on the streets with tenderness: “One night, as we crisscrossed the neighborhoods, I saw Sylvia several times sitting on the sidewalk with people who were also sitting on the sidewalk, so she could meet them eye to eye. That is what I remember most about Sylvia. When she was with someone, she gave all of her attention to them, holding eye contact in a way that was compassionate and caring.”
We are especially grateful that Sylvia remembered SF Night Ministry through a generous legacy gift. We receive this gift as one more expression of her lifelong commitment to showing up wherever care was needed. We extend our prayers and condolences to Sylvia’s family, friends, congregation, and all who were blessed by her companionship and ministry.
May Sylvia rest in peace and rise in glory.
